Frequently asked questions

What orthodontic problems
can Dr. McKee treat?

Dr. McKee has experience and success treating a wide range of orthodontic issues including but not limited to:

  • Crowding and Rotations

  • Spacing

  • Deep Bites

  • Crossbites

  • Underbites

  • Open Bites

  • Oral Habits

  • Misaligned Jaws

  • Facial Asymmetries

  • Jaw Pain

  • Broken Retainers

Does my child need two
sets of braces?

Two phases of orthodontic treatment (Phase I and Phase II) are not always indicated, but it is always best to talk with Dr. McKee to see if your child needs early orthodontic intervention. The American Board of Orthodontics recommends your child to see an orthodontist by age 7-8 to detect for early growth and development concerns. This is a proactive approach to ensure your child's skeletal and dental growth patterns are developing favorably.
Phase I treatment is indicated only for specific cases including crossbites, finger or tongue habits, increasing or maintaining space for permanent teeth, airway enhancement, and reducing possible bullying at school. Here at Ashley River Orthodontics, we ensure that each treatment is tailored to your child, and our mission is to not recommend treatment unless it is indicated as not every child is a candidate for Phase I treatment.

How frequently will
I need to visit ARO?

Even though we would love to see all of our patients every day, we understand that your time is valuable so thankfully our patients do not have to visit us every day. Generally orthodontic appointments are scheduled every 6-15 weeks depending on what stage you are in and what type of treatment you have.

Who is a candidate for
orthodontic treatment?

We proudly offer treatment to patients of all ages beginning at age 7! At Ashley River Orthodontics, we work closely with your dentist to ensure your treatment is timed appropriately and finished at the highest quality.

How long will orthodontic
treatment take?

This is the age old question everyone asks about orthodontic treatment! The honest answer is — it just depends! On average treatments can range from 1-2 years but the actual time will be determined on your specific needs and how complex of a case you have. Dr. McKee will give you an exact answer during your complimentary consultation and let you know how long to expect!

Am I able to start treatment
at my first visit?

The easy answer is: Absolutely you can! However, we pride ourselves at ARO of being honest and transparent, and Dr. McKee will not recommend starting treatment until you are ready. If starting treatment at your initial consultation is something that you and Dr. McKee agree is best, absolutely we are here to get you started! To get started on the same day, a 3D scan of your mouth will be taken and used to customize the appliances that best fit your treatment needs. It is quick, efficient, and very easy.
